Planning a trip to the Maldives usually comes with one big decision: overwater villa or beach villa. Both offer their own version of paradise, and at Sirru Fen Fushi you don’t have to compromise, since our private lagoon resort was built with both in mind.
This guide breaks down what each villa type actually offers, who it suits best, and how our 600-hectare lagoon and 9km house reef shape the experience either way.
What Is an Overwater Villa?

An overwater villa sits directly above the lagoon, connected to the island by a wooden jetty. At Sirru Fen Fushi, our Water Villas start at 164 sqm for the Sunrise Water Villa and go up to 525 sqm for the Three Bedroom Sunset Water Villa, with two and three bedroom layouts available for groups travelling together.
Every Water Villa comes with a private infinity pool, a sun deck, and direct access to the water. Sunrise-side Water Villas open onto our 9km house reef, so many guests snorkel straight from the steps of their own deck, while sunset-side Water Villas open directly onto the lagoon, better suited to swimming than reef exploration.
This is the villa type people often search for as a Maldives bungalow over water, prized for being quiet, tranquil, and built directly around the water itself. It suits honeymooners, couples celebrating an anniversary, and anyone who wants to wake up surrounded by the lagoon.
What Is a Beach Villa?

A Maldives beach villa puts you on the island itself, directly on the sand. Sirru Fen Fushi’s Beach Villas start at 360 sqm for the Sunrise and Sunset categories and go up to 1,155 sqm for the Three Bedroom Sunset Beach Villa, making them the more spacious option across the resort.
The larger footprint gives children more room to play, and villas like the Two Bedroom Sunset Beach Villa keep everyone together without losing privacy.
Within this collection, the Safari Beach Villa offers the same glamping-inspired design sited directly on the beach, a genuine Beach Villa in every sense. Every Beach Villa comes with its own private infinity pool,, wood decking, and a personal villa host, the details most guests searching for a Maldives beach villa with private pool are hoping to find.
Separately, Sirru Fen Fushi also offers the Safari Tented Villa, a distinct glamping-inspired stay set among the island’s gardens rather than on the beach. It’s a different accommodation concept from the Beach Villa collection above, worth a look for guests who want something different from a standard villa stay.
Overwater Villa vs Beach Villa: A Side-by-Side Look
| Overwater Villa | Beach Villa | |
|---|---|---|
| Size range | 164 – 525 sqm | 360 – 1,155 sqm |
| Setting | Above the lagoon | On the island, on the sand |
| A natural fit for | Couples, honeymoons, anniversaries | Families, groups, longer stays |
| Water access | Direct access to the reef or lagoon (varies by villa) | Directly on the sand |
| Private infinity pool | Yes, on every villa | Yes, on every villa |
| Largest layouts | Two & Three Bedroom Water Villas | Two & Three Bedroom Beach Villas, Sirru Residences |
Both villa types include luxury bedding, a private infinity pool, wood decking, and a personal villa host. Beach Villas include an indoor shower as well as an outdoor shower, while Water Villas are fitted with an indoor shower only, so the main difference comes down to setting and space rather than overall comfort level.
Which Villa Is Right for Your Trip?

If your trip is built around romance, an overwater villa offers falling asleep above the water and, on our sunrise-side Water Villas, the chance to snorkel straight off the steps of your own deck, the kind of details many couples associate with a Maldives honeymoon.
If you are travelling with family or a group of friends, a beach villa gives everyone more room to spread out. For larger groups, Sirru Residences takes this further still: a seven-bedroom private retreat created from three beachfront villas, with its own private beach, private pools and an outdoor cinema, built for up to 14 adults.
Not sure which fits? Our full villa collection breaks down every category in detail, and our reservations team can match a villa to your trip before you book.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
Is an overwater villa worth it in the Maldives?
For most guests planning a honeymoon or anniversary trip, an overwater villa is worth considering for its direct water access and uninterrupted views, something a beach setting cannot fully replicate. At Sirru Fen Fushi, our sunrise-side Water Villas sit above a 9km house reef, so snorkelling is often possible straight from the steps of your own deck; sunset-side Water Villas open directly onto the calm lagoon instead. The trade-off is size, since our Beach Villas offer considerably more square metres.
What is the difference between an overwater villa and a beach villa?
The main difference is location: an overwater villa sits above the lagoon on stilts, while a beach villa sits on the island itself, close to the sand. At Sirru Fen Fushi, both include a private pool and a personal villa host, so the choice comes down to whether you want direct water access or more living space. Beach Villas also range larger, up to 1,155 sqm in our Three Bedroom category.
Which villa type is better for families?
Beach villas are particularly well suited to families, thanks to their larger layouts and easier access to the island’s activities and kids’ club. Sirru Fen Fushi’s Two and Three Bedroom Beach Villas keep everyone in one space, and for bigger groups, Sirru Residences adds a private beach, private pools and an outdoor cinema.
Do all villas at Sirru Fen Fushi have a private pool?
Yes. Every villa category at Sirru Fen Fushi, whether overwater or on the beach, includes its own private infinity pool and wood decking. Beach Villas include an indoor shower as well as an outdoor shower, while Water Villas have an indoor shower only. This applies across all sizes, from the 164 sqm Sunrise Water Villa to the 1,155 sqm Three Bedroom Sunset Beach Villa. A personal villa host is also assigned to every stay.
Can you snorkel directly from an overwater villa?
In many cases, yes, particularly from our sunrise-side Water Villas, which sit closest to Sirru Fen Fushi’s 9km house reef, letting guests snorkel straight from their own deck steps. Sunset-side Water Villas open directly onto the calm lagoon instead, which suits swimming more than reef snorkelling.
How many beach and water villas does Sirru Fen Fushi have?
Sirru Fen Fushi has 75 Beach Villas and 37 Water Villas. Beach Villas range from the 360 sqm Sunrise Beach Villa up to the 1,155 sqm Three Bedroom Sunset Beach Villa, and Water Villas range from the 164 sqm Sunrise Water Villa up to the 525 sqm Three Bedroom Sunset Water Villa. Two and three bedroom layouts are available in both collections for groups and families.
Is a beach villa or overwater villa better for a honeymoon?
Many couples choose an overwater villa for a honeymoon, drawn to the privacy and uninterrupted water views. Others prefer a Beach Villa’s extra space and easier access to dining and activities around the island. Either way, Sirru Fen Fushi’s romance experiences are designed around both villa types, so the setting comes down to personal preference rather than one option being better than the other.
